Janet and Arnaud's families live on opposite sides of the world, yet they wanted to have a ritual that symbolised both their own union and the union of their families. The two families do not speak the same languages, so Gracefully's wedding celebrants in France had to create a ritual that went beyond the language barrier and meant something to everyone.
Janet's heritage is rooted in Japanese culture, so we referred to Shinto philosophy that implies a respect for nature. We created a ritual around flowers whereby each member of both families was invited to put a large beautiful rare flower in a transparent vase. Then Janet and Arnaud poured water into the same vase. In this case the water was the symbol of love.
The result was a beautiful bouquet representing the union of the two families united by the love of the couple.
"Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter for the other.
Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth for the other.
Now there is no more loneliness, for each of you will be companion for the other.
Now you are two persons, but there is only one life before you.
Go now to your dwelling place to begin the days of your life together.
May your days together be good and long upon the earth."
